Have you ever been invited to a networking event and made up some kind of random excuse not to go just because you were too nervous to talk to people? For some, networking is the least attractive part of their job, while others thrive in that environment. Networking is important for any industry – it helps create important connections and can lead to future career opportunities.
Sometimes it is can feel like it’s easier to depend on LinkedIn for networking, but it isn’t. Think about all the people that you’re friends with on Facebook, but you don’t really know. They don’t like your statuses, and you never comment on their posts. Neither of you are helping or supporting each other. It’s the same way on LinkedIn! To help get you out of your comfort zone and into making quality connections, here are some tips to networking without depending on a digital profile:
- Don’t be afraid to start the conversation. It takes a lot of confidence to be the one to start a conversation, but it’s not that difficult. All it takes is a simple, ‘Hi my name is….’, to start a conversation. Even then, you don’t need a big meeting or event to make a connection. Something as simple as asking the coworker you always bump into on the way to the bathroom out for coffee will help extend your network and earn yourself a new friend.
- Look for how you can help others, not how can others help you. It seems like people only want to network to get something for themselves (a new job, connections, internships, etc.) without wondering what other professionals are needing. Offering your skillset to solve someone else’s problem can help make a great first impression for yourself and can create a memorable connection.
- Have a goal to make a friend. Going to large events can sometimes be intimidating and you can be overwhelmed by the amount of people there. Take a deep breath and focus on making quality connections, not quantity. It will be more worth your time to make 1 or 2 connections that will last after the event than trying to talk to everyone under the sun.
- Research who is speaking/topics at the event. Knowing the schedule of events at the conference can also help with event and public speaking anxiety. For introverts, knowing the structure of what’s going to happen at the event will help you to feel more in control. It will also help you to contribute to conversations if you know the hot topics.
People fear the word networking more than they should. It sounds intimidating, especially for those who might be a little more introverted than others. But, it isn’t a difficult thing to accomplish. In the end, networking is about forming relationships in your industry and creating friendships that will last a lifetime.
