When people think of spring cleaning, they tend to think of getting the dust bunnies off the top of the fan in the living room, wiping off the glass windows, and deep cleaning the bathroom toilet. However, spring cleaning should also apply to the office! Take some time to clean out your work space, and you might find it easier to focus on your to-do list.

Clean desk, clean mind.

For some people, cleaning might be a way to procrastinate, but others can’t focus on the project at hand if there is a stack of unorganized papers sitting right next to them. It might be a good time to clean out your entire desk (or office) and see what you have. If you need it, keep it. If you don’t need it or you already have a digital copy of it, toss it. While you are doing this, don’t be afraid to deep clean! You just might find some 5-month-old Oreos stuffed into the bottom of a drawer (unfortunately, I speak from experience). Your head will be much clearer once your mind isn’t occupied with everything stacked up around your desk.

Everything has its place.

Part of cleaning your work space might also mean finding a spot for everything. Whether that means using storage containers, folders, and labels to help make that spot, find the way that works best for you. That way, when you are in a rush to find something, you know where it is (or should be – this only works if you USE the organizing boxes!).

Rearrange your work space.

Has your desk always been in the same spot for years? If you can, move it! Moving furniture around can almost make your office feel like a new space without replacing anything. If you have the budget, go ahead and buy some new décor to freshen up your office and showcase your personality.

Digital clutter needs organizing too!

Now that your physical work place is clean and organized, let’s take a look at your computer. Having a hard time finding any file? Time to clean it out. Go through and find what files you need and use often. Organize them by client and project. If you have files that you want to keep but do not use, store them on an external hard drive. That way, you can clear off some memory on your computer and it’s always best to keep copies of files in different locations anyway! External hard drives, Dropbox, and Cloud memory are great ways to store your files so that even if you do lose the copy on your computer, you have a back-up.

While you are on your computer, it might be time to organize your email, Dropbox, and even your website. Once again, organize your emails by client and project, and delete the ones that you no longer need or are spam. Make folders in your inbox that way you can find any email with ease. You can give your website a fresh new design if you want – even just updating the photos can make it feel like brand new!
